Orange County Economic Development

Name of Business:  Orangetheory Fitness

Description: Heart-rate based interval training in a group studio setting

What year was your business founded/established?  Oct 2014

What made you decide to open your business?  As Chapel Hill residents, my husband and I wanted to bring something to the community that could impact peoples’ health in a positive way. The Orangetheory Fitness product is effective and unique and accessible to all fitness levels!  We love seeing how it changes peoples’ lives, and we love showing our young kids what hard work and business ownership looks like.

What makes your business unique?  Orangetheory Fitness is a unique, boutique fitness concept because it is backed by the science of heart rate-based interval training and the OTF ‘afterburn’, increasing caloric burn for up to 36 hours post workout. It is effective for all fitness levels from elite athletes to individuals just beginning their fitness journey, males and females, ages 14-80.  Finally, it is coach-led while incorporating technology with heart rate monitors and real time feedback through smartphone applications, allowing participants to track their progress over time.

What do you wish your local neighbors (potential customers) knew about your business?  Orangetheory Fitness is not just for ‘fit’ people and it is not ‘too hard’ for you. We have seen members of all levels achieve personal success beyond what they imagined.  It is NOT an intimidating environment, but rather one of inclusion, encouragement and accountability beyond what you could find on your own. Most of all, it is a family environment and we have fun!

What are your next goals for your business (any exciting expansion plans or new product/services)?  We have been busy opening studios across the Triangle and Wilmington area, opening our 9th location in Durham in December, 2017 and our 10th location in North Hills in January, 2018.  Members have such success with the product that we are excited to bring Orangetheory Fitness to more corners of the region, and more will be coming in 2018!

If someone were to give you $100,000 to invest in your business, how would you spend it?  Three ways: continued expansion (hiring), team incentives and rewards, community outreach.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in Orange County?  We love our members and the warm reception the community has given us these last few years! We look forward to an even better 2018.
