Orange County Economic Development

Name of Business:  Jay’s Chicken Shack

Description:  Restaurant

What year was your business founded/established?   We opened our doors for business on September 8, 2014.

What made you decide to open your business?  Jay has always had a passion to cook, mostly for the joy it brings people. He loves to watch them enjoy his food. I always tell Jay “you are like an Italian Grandma”. We moved to Hillsborough in 2006. We fell in love with the area and all the people we met in our neighborhood and through Orange County Rec sports. My son has played in every sport since Kindergarten (now in 11th grade) and Jay quickly became involved coaching Rec soccer. A restaurant in Hillsborough was always a dream, which then turned into a goal. What is better than to use your passion to support your home town and local community?

What makes your business unique?  Jay’s is family owned and therefore it comes naturally to Jay to treat you like family. It is important to Jay that you enjoy your experience from the moment you walk in the door until the moment you leave. Jay’s Chicken Shack has become a gathering place for many locals; not to mention many travelers who travel back and forth between Virginia and NC. Our staff quickly gets to know our customers and the friendly interaction becomes as special as our food.

I just realized I never highlighted our main product … our chicken. I failed to note that it is fresh and hand cut as well as a unique and flavorful breading recipe.

What do you wish your local neighbors (potential customers) knew about your business?

  • We take pride in our food and service. Our chicken is fresh hand-cut. We cook all our food fresh daily.
  • It is important to us that we cater to each individual. Jay and staff will do their best to customize our menu options to your particular liking. So never hesitate to ask.
  • We also cater – breakfast, lunch or dinner.
  • We do deliver, however, there has been times we were not staffed to meet the demand. If that should happen you can call in your order to avoid the wait.
  • Since our food is freshly cooked there can be a short wait depending on the menu item.
  • We sell Hershey’s Ice Cream – 8 flavors to choose from.  Our shakes are the yummy old fashion shake – customers love them!
  • We support as many community events/fundraisers as we can. Although our budget may be small we do what we can even if all we can offer is a $10 gift certificate to Jay’s.

What are your next goals for your business (any exciting expansion plans or new product/services)?  Jay’s specialty is Mediterranean cuisine. Late September/Early October we will begin Mediterranean Monday. Each Monday we will feature a Mediterranean dish between 4pm and 8pm. We also have plans to package Jay’s unique breading and BBQ sauce for purchase. Hopefully the latter will happen by the end of the year.

If someone were to give you $100,000 to invest in your business, how would you spend it?  We would spend the money on building improvements. The building is very old we would love the opportunity to update and enlarge the kitchen, seating area and bathrooms. We would also like to add a drive through window as well as create a more comfortable, engaging outside seating area.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in Orange County?  The strong community support. There is a great sense of pride and humanity that flows throughout Orange County area. It is great to see so many people, from very diverse backgrounds, work together for the greater good.
